- Multi-Link Operation (MLO)
- Multi-RU operation
- Higher modulation rates
- Improved performance and efficiency
Wi-Fi 7 certification includes features such as Multi-Link Operation and support for 320 MHz operation, which are designed to improve throughput, reliability and responsiveness.
In simple terms, Wi-Fi 7 is designed to move more data, more efficiently, particularly when networks are busy.
Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7: What’s the Difference?
One of the easiest ways to understand the difference is to think about a road.
Wi-Fi 6 improves the roads you already have, making traffic flow more efficiently.
Wi-Fi 7 doesn’t just improve the roads—it provides wider lanes and new ways for traffic to move between them.
That becomes particularly useful when you’re dealing with lots of traffic.
Speed
Wi-Fi 7 has considerably higher theoretical maximum speeds than Wi-Fi 6.
However, it’s important not to get too excited about the numbers manufacturers advertise.
The speed you actually experience depends on:

- Walls and interference

If your broadband connection is 500Mbps, buying a Wi-Fi 7 access point isn’t suddenly going to give you a multi-gigabit internet connection.

As the number of devices increases, network efficiency becomes increasingly important.
Wi-Fi 7 is designed with these demanding environments in mind.
You Regularly Transfer Large Files
If your business regularly moves large files across the local network, faster wireless performance could make a meaningful difference.
This might include:

- Large backups
- Network Attached Storage (NAS)
For these workloads, local network speed can be just as important as your internet connection.
You Use Real-Time Applications

Don’t Forget Your Wired Network
This is one of the most commonly overlooked parts of a Wi-Fi upgrade.
You could install the fastest Wi-Fi 7 access points available—but if they’re connected using slow network equipment, you’ve simply moved the bottleneck somewhere else.
Before upgrading, check:
- Network switches
- Ethernet cabling
- Router
- Internet connection
- Network adapters
- NAS equipment
For example, if your access point has a multi-gigabit Ethernet port but your switch only supports 1Gbps, the wired connection can limit the performance of the wireless network.
A proper Wi-Fi upgrade should therefore look at the whole network, not just the access point.
Your Devices Need to Support Wi-Fi 7

Buying a Wi-Fi 7 router doesn’t automatically make all your existing devices Wi-Fi 7 devices.

Wi-Fi 6E essentially extends Wi-Fi 6 into the 6 GHz band where permitted.

For some homes and businesses, Wi-Fi 6E can therefore be an attractive middle ground between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7.
However, device compatibility and local spectrum regulations need to be considered.
Don’t Upgrade Just Because the Number Is Bigger
It’s easy to assume:
Wi-Fi 7 > Wi-Fi 6 = Wi-Fi 7 must be better for everyone.
But networking isn’t quite that simple.
The best Wi-Fi system is the one that matches your:
- Internet speed
- Number of users
- Building layout
- Device requirements
- Network traffic
- Budget
- Future plans
A properly designed Wi-Fi 6 network can easily outperform a poorly configured Wi-Fi 7 network.
The access point’s location, network design, channel selection and wired infrastructure can all have a huge impact on real-world performance.
What Should a Small Business Do?
If you’re a small business considering a wireless upgrade, don’t start by asking:
“Should we buy Wi-Fi 7?”
Instead, ask:
“What problem are we trying to solve?”
Are employees experiencing slow connections?
Are video calls dropping?
Is Wi-Fi unreliable in certain areas?
Are you adding lots of new devices?
Have you upgraded to very fast broadband?
Are large file transfers taking too long?
If the answer is yes, it may be worth investigating.
But the solution could be better access point placement, additional access points, new cabling, a network switch upgrade, or simply better configuration—not necessarily Wi-Fi 7.

So, Should You Upgrade?
For most homes and small businesses, there’s no need to rush out and replace a perfectly good Wi-Fi 6 network.
If your existing Wi-Fi is reliable and meets your needs, keep using it.
However, if you’re installing a brand-new network, have very fast broadband, operate a high-density environment, regularly transfer large files, or want to build a network designed for the next several years, Wi-Fi 7 is certainly worth considering.
The important thing is to look at the entire network rather than the Wi-Fi standard alone.

But newer doesn’t always mean necessary.
